Magnet StatusThis Montessori magnet was founded in 1986 by Dr. Martha M. Urioste, Principal, to attract children to Mitchell Elementary in the Cole neighborhood of Northeast Denver. The area has one of the highest poverty levels in the city. The school population was determined by strict guidelines to achieve integration. Preference was given to neighborhood children; others applied and were accepted as they fulfilled requirements to achieve racial integration. The school opened in August, 1986, with five primary classes with children ages 3 to 6. Each year a grade was added until there were 500 children from ages three to twelve. The first group of 6th graders graduated in 1993. In 1995, the federal courts released Denver from the court order to achieve integration. This created a need for neighborhood schools for the children in Northeast Denver who had been bused to schools in south Denver. The Denver Board of Education chose to use the Mitchell building for a neighborhood school and to move the Montessori Magnet. An unused school in southwest Denver was prepared to receive the program, and in August of l996 classes began at Denison. Children from the Mitchell area as well as others are bused to the new facility. Denison Montessori MissionCommitted to Montessori principles and practices, our community cultivates each child's unique potential and natural love of learning. What Does Denison Montessori Offer?Denison's Montessori curriculum employs multi-age classrooms: 3, 4, and 5-year-olds comprise the primary program; 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders are in the lower elementary program; and 4th, 5th, and 6th graders form the upper elementary program. Older children in each class work with advanced materials and frequently mentor their younger classmates. Students typically stay with their classmates and instructor for three years. A Suzuki Violin program at Denison Montessori is offered to students in kindergarten through 3rd grade. As a magnet school, Denison draws students from a wide range of backgrounds throughout Denver. That diversity is one of Denison's strengths as our students learn to appreciate classmates from a variety of cultures within a school environment that emphasizes self-respect and personal responsibility.
